The sword knot was traditionally used to attach the sword to the swordsman’s wrist so that it could be easily retrieved in combat. Today, the sword knot is decorative and ceremonial, however its original function remains. It is an essential accoutrement and no sword is complete without its proper sword knot.
There are three types of sword knots carried in Canada: woven riband (lace), woven cord, leather strap, and all with plaited sword knot. Sword knots are either pointed or flat-bottomed. Field sword knots are leather while the full dress sword knots are metalized gold or silver riband or cord, with colour silk accents unique to the CAF regiment or branch.
Sword knots are usually worn wrapped around the upper part of the sword hilt. Cavalry tradition has the sword knot worn loose – so unwinding is not required once mounted.
We stock CAF and RCMP regulation sword knots.
